Character Portrait: Gibford Miller

2016 - Day 258:
This piece is long overdue, and as is often the case, after a long time of a piece sitting still I will scrap it and redo it from scratch, and that's exactly what I did here. I redid the entire portrait in my new style, which I have named 'Hardline Style' (because I like labelling/sorting things for sake of tidiness and order).
But  I digress... Here is the ever-curious Gibford Miller, whom departed from his world amidst a mystery full of rats, magic, demons and sinister plots. Gibford Miller is a character owned/played by u/Rokkos, in the one-shots consistent universe of a D&D setting named Mertoth, which you can find more information about here! Come play with us!

As a bonus for those of you who saw the initial portrait that was being made, here is a small side-by-side. I was really unhappy with how it was coming out painted/lineless (as you can see I only got through the top half of him), so it just sat there forever and a day until I came across it today and decided it would be perfect to re-envision in my new style.

Initial Character Concept Sheet - Bronze Dragonborn

2016 - Day 164:
This is an initial concept sheet for a bronze dragonborn character in my in-person D&D 5E game. I am planning on making a similar sheet for the other players, and maybe to round it all out I'll make one for my character as well even though I already know what she looks like.

Anyway, this is where all of my design work starts for characters if I don't already have a visual reference for them. I begin with what the basic race looks like, adjust body type appropriately, pick out the unique features (usually the face, sometimes other features too) to offer several options/variations, and then sort out potential outfits. These refs don't have weapons since I don't like to pinpoint my attention to those until after we get the general image of the character since their style should influence their weapons, I think. These initial concepts do not always stick around, but they are at least a jump-point to get started and I find them very helpful to unravelling just what a character looks like.

Malthaea SemiChibi

2016 - Day 119:
Please welcome my newest D&D character, Malthaea Moonbreeze! (SemiChibi Style)

Malthaea Moonbreeze is a wanderer, always seeking knowledge and the discovery of new things. The alabaster moon-elf dresses practically for her adventures, wielding a longbow and shortsword (and a hidden dagger). As is the case with all elves, her age is very difficult to discern but to a skilled eye one might notice that she isn't quite as lithe and quick as the younger elves, and perhaps most telling of all, her interest in other humanoids seems to be purely platonic.

As many long-lived individuals often do, Malthaea has taken to travelling to fulfill her desire for knowledge and discovery. Over time she found herself craving the companionship of something with a more similar life-span to her own and sought out the knowledge of familiar summoning, because what lives longer than a summoned spirit? Ever since, a small raven can often be found roosting close by or perching on her shoulder or pack.

Among her research for summoning a companion, Malthaea stumbled across some very dark magics. The ancient leatherbound tome (which she refers to as the Book of Shadows) that she now carries on her person at all times scribes the ramblings of a madman. But every tall tale has it's kernels of truth... and she won't allow anyone else near the passages that inadvertently allowed her to tap into the mighty Fenrir's chaotic and otherworldly power. The newly formed warlock (a few centures ago) set out to find answers to the unanswerable questions of the universe, and has ever since been looking to help stow away this potentially dangerous knowledge from hands which would use it for darker means.

Urgent Research - Concept Sketch

2016 - Day 109:
Concept Sketch of a personal piece of my character Skah. From here, the next step will be to add in rudimentary colours and then to begin the long process of rendering details.

Skah is a Tengu which is a relatively uncommon race, which means that most days she wears a full length trenchcoat and plague mask to look a little less conspicuous.
