Concept Designs - Valkyr's Blessing, Grace and Justice

Hit a bit of an art block yesterday so I started today off by revisiting some old sketches and I decided to hash out a concept I had for a Valkyrie character. So far we've got 3 items in this 'Armor/Outfit/Weapon set', not sure yet if I'll end up making any more pieces to go with them or if I will be using this for one of my other projects yet. But overall I think this was a very productive day and I've hopefully broken my art block.

This is Valkyr's Blessing, a mighty set of copper wings that will deflect attacks or offer flight to the user.

This is Valkyr's Grace, a beautiful and practical mantle that is the center piece for this outfit set. It houses the source gem which is used to activate various abilities in the other pieces.

This is Valkyr's Justice, a swift and sturdy long-spear that can gain a ranged attack, perfect for pairing with a set of flight-ready wings.

Initial Character Concept Sheet - Bronze Dragonborn

2016 - Day 164:
This is an initial concept sheet for a bronze dragonborn character in my in-person D&D 5E game. I am planning on making a similar sheet for the other players, and maybe to round it all out I'll make one for my character as well even though I already know what she looks like.

Anyway, this is where all of my design work starts for characters if I don't already have a visual reference for them. I begin with what the basic race looks like, adjust body type appropriately, pick out the unique features (usually the face, sometimes other features too) to offer several options/variations, and then sort out potential outfits. These refs don't have weapons since I don't like to pinpoint my attention to those until after we get the general image of the character since their style should influence their weapons, I think. These initial concepts do not always stick around, but they are at least a jump-point to get started and I find them very helpful to unravelling just what a character looks like.

Urgent Research - Concept Sketch

2016 - Day 109:
Concept Sketch of a personal piece of my character Skah. From here, the next step will be to add in rudimentary colours and then to begin the long process of rendering details.

Skah is a Tengu which is a relatively uncommon race, which means that most days she wears a full length trenchcoat and plague mask to look a little less conspicuous.

Landscape Concept 2 - Imperium of Man

2016 - Day 89:
This is the second landscape concept piece of the Imperium of Man project, which is a D&D setting made and maintained by StrikingCrayon. This particular piece is the header for the subreddit (which should be updated sometime tomorrow!)

This project is going to be an online consistent game where you can create your own characters and even star in games on twitch. For more information head over to/r/strikingcrayon and subscribe to be the first to get updates. The first games will be coming along very soon, so go make those characters!

Landscape Concept - Imperium of Man

2016 - Day 87:
This is just the first piece of one of those larger projects I was talking about a few weeks back.
Landscape concept art for the Imperium of Man, which is a D&D setting made and maintained by StrikingCrayon. This particular piece is the footer for the subreddit, and it's matching header will be updated tomorrow so hold tight for that!

Concept Skeleton: Quillon

2016 - Day 70:
I'm really liking how this guy is developing, so today's piece of the day is a quick skeleton mock-up of my Quillon. This species is very flexible and has that whip-like length like serpents. You may also notice that several of the vertebrae have extra long nibs at the top, because they extend into cartilage and hard tissue that forms the protrusions along the spine (see my other pieces tagged 'quillon'). Another notable feature that isn't displayed here is the folding teeth inside of their mouths. Mostly opportunistic, they seldom have need for sharp teeth so they are kept folded down the majority of the time

Forest Druid

2016 - Day 35:
Something I really struggle with is completing art without fussing over all of the details. As such, concept pieces are very hard for me to do because I end up going way overboard and spending hours upon hours until I end up with something that isn't a mere concept anymore but a completed illustration or painting. So, I am challenging myself to practice loose concept painting, and this is the first of those. Hope you like it! :)
